Poeta, dramaturgo y crítico literario alemán, una de las más grandes figuras de la literatura alemana. Schiller fue educado bajo la supervisión de un autoritario duque, de cuya tiranía el joven escapó para dedicarse a escribir. Con su exitosa primera obra de teatro,
Los bandidos (1781), abordó el tema de la libertad, el cual desarrollaría a lo largo de toda su obra.
Don Carlos (1787), su primer poema dramático de importancia, ayudó a establecer el
verso blanco como el modo de expresión más común dentro de la poesía dramática alemana. Su jubilosa
Oda a la alegría fue utilizada posteriormente por
Ludwig van Beethoven en su
Novena sinfonía. Mientras se desempeñaba como profesor de historia en la Universidad de Jena en 1789, compuso su obra maestra del género épico, el drama histórico
Wallenstein (1800). Durante el período que dedicó a formular sus ideas estéticas, escribió ensayos filosóficos, extraordinarios poemas reflexivos y algunas de sus baladas más populares. Pasó sus últimos años en Weimar, con la salud muy deteriorada, cerca de su amigo
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Sus obras teatrales de madurez, entre las que se destacan
María Estuardo (estrenada en 1800) y
Guillermo Tell (
1804), examinan la libertad interior del alma que le permite al individuo vencer las vulnerabilidades físicas y la presión de las carencias materiales.
